Wake up ! Speakers@FOSDEM’10 call.
December 10, 2009
![]()
Dear *,
As you already probably know, no devroom is assigned to distribution any more at FOSDEM.
Now, FOSDEM TEAM invite us to have debate, brainstorm or do presentations for and with other distributions. Ref : http://www.fosdem.org/2010/distrominiconf
What I think is good for everybody.
Actually, I do not really know how really to manage that on the Fedora side cause it still no clear for me. I have already contacts with CentOS and Mandriva on that subject but we are still nowhere.
And FOSDEM is in 57 days.
Fortunately, I am not alone in that case
(I mean other distributions)
Well, all I thing I need are speakers, stakeholders, developers and so on for the Fedora part on the following subjects in order to participate to the FOSDEM Distrominiconf.
* Packaging
* Localization
* Community Infrastructure
* Test and QA
* Governance
* Working with upstream
Please leave a comment if you are interested.
Thanks for your proposals.
Thanks for reading and your help.
Best Regards
Frederic

JBoss Tools Installation on Fedora 11
November 6, 2009
![]()
As I am currently working with JBoss seam, I had to install JBoss Tools on my Fedora Eclipse 3.4.2 – Fedora 11 -.
So in order to share the procedure to every one and mostly to avoid to forget or lose it I decided to write it on this blog.
In addition, it permit to avoid eclipse/JBoss Tools problems dependence such as :

And Errors such as :
Cannot complete the request. See the details.
Unsatisfied dependency: [org.hibernate.eclipse.feature.feature.group 3.2.4.v200909151014R-H192-GA] requiredCapability: org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu/org.eclipse.wst.xml.core/1.1.0
So these are the steps :
I] Install Eclispe on your Fedora.
I.I] Open a terminal as standard user – here mine “fhornain” – and be root.
[fhornain@localhost ~]$ su -
[root@localhost ~]# yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk-devel
[root@localhost ~]# yum install eclipse-platform
II ] Launch eclipse.
II.I] Indeed you should select in you Fedora main menu bar Applications > Programming > Eclipse
If not, launch a terminal and run the following command :
[fhornain@localhost ~]$ eclipse -vm /usr/bin/java
Rem: Change the path /usr/bin/java if it is not your java default location
Then you should see the eclipse starting banner – see below -

II.II] Then eclipse should ask you where you would like to save your projects – see image below -

The default location should be fine – well, for me
-
II.III] Then Welcome screen appears – see below -. Close it with a click on the top left cross.

III ] Install JBoss Tools
III.I] When Eclipse starts, go to Help > Software Updates. The following window should appears :

III.II] Then click on the tab named “Available Software” – see below -

III.III] Then click on button “Add Site” on the right of the window – see above – :

III.IV] You see appear a new window where you are going to past the following URL : http://download.jboss.org/jbosstools/updates/stable/ which is the offcial JBoss Tools URL – see below -

Then click the OK button.
III.V] Then do the same with http://download.eclipse.org/releases/ganymede/ and http://download.eclipse.org/birt/update-site/2.3/ as mentioned for JBoss Tools in points III.III] and III.IV]
III.VI] You should see appear a new line in the “Software updates and add-ons” window – see below -

III.VII] Then click on the link “Ganymade Update Site” as show in the above picture :

III.VIII] Then go down and choose “Web and Java EE Development”

And click on the install button – see above -.

Then the installation start – see above – :

Then click on next button, accept the term of the licence and click on the finish button.

The packages installation starts – see above – :

Finally the installation finish and the following window appear in order to reboot the eclipse IDE application – see below -

Click on the Yes button
III.IX ] Now we’ll do the same steps for JBoss Tools and Bitr as we did for Ganymed “Web and Java EE Development”.
You should see the entered JBoss Tools links done during III.III] and III.IV] steps then click on the JBoss Tools arrow and select JBoss Tools line – see above -

And do the same procedure as we did for Ganymed “Web and Java EE Development” at step III.VIII].
Let’s hope it clear.
Now you can play with seam and other JBoss projects…
IV] Launch Seam project with Eclipse and Jboss Tools.
IV.I] Indeed you should select in you Fedora main menu bar Applications > Programming > Eclipse
If not, launch a terminal and run the following command :
[fhornain@localhost ~]$ eclipse -vm /usr/bin/java
Rem: Change the path /usr/bin/java if it is not your java default location
You should see appear the following window :

IV.II] Then click on the main menu bar File > New > Project and the following window appears – see below -

Then Choose your new JBoss Seam Project and name it.
BTW, do not forget BIRT otherwise you will not have JDBC Connectors
Enjoy !

Belgian/Brussels Open Source recurrent Meeting

Every parents want the best for their children !
So among other, Parents subscribe for an ADSL service to a provider in order to have Internet at home and let their children freely read, write, learn and play with this amazing tool thinking it is a good thing for them.
At first glance, they are right !
Nonetheless and unfortunately Internet does also contain indecent contents, scams and so on…
Obviously YOU as adult already knows that.
But does YOUR CHILDREN know ?
So you have three choices :
1] Surf the internet with your children.
2] Let’s you children access freely to the Internet and do not care about what she/he/they is/are reading/learning/watching/etc…
3] Set Internet web site ACL- Access control List -/Black List
For my part, I will opt the third option.
So If you are like me then Open Source is the answer !
DansGuardian and SquidGuard are respectively content-control software – software designed to control which websites users can access – and Black List oriented software .
In addition, DansGuardian also includes virus filtering and usage monitoring features. Witch could be useful.
For more details, I invite you to go their respective web site – see below for URL -
BTW, these software can also be used in other domains than Children’s Internet Protection. You see what I mean ? e.g. In business compagny, firm.
Rem: Maybe your provider already offer you this service via your ADSL box.
Message for my Fedora packager Friends, it should be nice to have DansGuardian packaged in the Fedora distribution.
Ok, I could do it myself but do not have time currently. ![]()
Thanks for your time.

User Mode Linux is another mean to run independent, safe and secure Virtual Linux distributions, versions and processes on your main Linux system.
Unfortunately, often unknown by System Administrators.
Ok, it use paravirtualized technique but if you are using Linux Virtual machines on Linux Physical Machine it is most of the time responding to your basic needs – e.g. web servers, and so on -.
You will be able to use it on Fedora 10 with the following package : uml_utilities.i386 0:20070815-5.fc10
Otherwise you can download it on the UML website
It contains uml_net, uml_mconsole, uml_switch, tunctl, and a number of other useful utilities in order to use the user-mode linux kernel.
You will find a great article at the following URL : http://www.redhat.com/magazine/001nov04/features/usermode/
Obviously, It exists also other techniques, methods in order to run VM – virtual machines – on Linux and VmWare is probably one of the most known.- Marketing have done its job, you see what I mean
–
However, it is not always the right answer to your needs and requirements.
Here is a list of Open source Virtualized project as well as their associated types and licences:
Emulation type :
Bochs – Licence -> LGPL -
QEMU – Licence -> LGPL/GPL -
Paravirtualization type :
UML - Licence -> GPL -
Paravirtualization and Full virtualization type – with v-processors (Intel, Amd) – :
Xen - Licence -> GPL – (own by Citrix now)
Operating system-level virtualization type :
Linux-VServer - Licence -> GPL -
OpenVZ - Licence -> GPL -
Full Virtualization
KVM – Licence -> GPL (supported by Red Hat)
Virtualbox – Licence -> GPL
Proprietary Solution & Full Virtualization :
VmWare – Licence -> Proprietary Solution –
Now, it is up to you to choose the application which best fit your strategy, your requirements, your budgets and your needs.
BTW, Thanks to Eddy to have shown me what I did not see.
RedHat/Free IPA Status ???
March 25, 2009

First of all, for those who did not know what is IPA :
IPA is an open source identity and access management solution that centrally manages identity, policy, and audits for users, machines, and services in your Linux and Unix environment.
- Well a great tool for those who do not want to manage a bunch of Linux servers with local authentication –
In addition, you can use it freely via http://www.freeipa.org/page/Main_Page or with Red Hat support via http://www.redhat.com/enterprise_ipa/
So, WHY this post ? Just to present IPA ?
Definitively not !
Well, indeed I heard the Red Hat support for IPA will stop soon for unknown reasons.
My first reaction was for those who taken this decision : Did they think about current IT projects which planned to use IPA ?
My second reaction was : Why did Red Hat launch the product officially then few month ago ?
My third reaction was : If Red Hat took effectively that decision, they probably have good reasons but what did they propose in order to replace it ? Penrose virtual directory ? Symark PowerBroke ? or others ? Not sure, these one responds to the needs of my clients.
Let’s hope it is just a false rumour cause if it is the case I do not think for my part it is a good choice even if project without support still continue to evolve.
Maybe, with this post I will have more explanations about this rumours.
